Capture any frame from a video and export as PNG, JPEG, or WebP.
Thumbnail Generator captures any frame from a video file and exports it as a high-quality PNG, JPEG, or WebP image. Video thumbnails are the first thing viewers see when browsing content — a compelling thumbnail can be the difference between a click and a scroll-past. Manually extracting a frame from a video typically requires either taking a screenshot (which may include player UI elements) or scrubbing through the video in an editor and exporting a still. This tool streamlines the process: you upload the video, seek to the exact frame you want, and export it as an image without any player chrome, watermark, or quality loss. All processing happens in your browser using the Canvas API. The video is decoded locally, the selected frame is painted onto a canvas, and the image is exported in your chosen format. The video never leaves your device.
Upload a video and use the built-in player to seek through the footage. When you find the perfect frame, click the Capture button. The tool extracts the current frame and displays it in a preview panel. You can then choose the output format: PNG (lossless, best for text-heavy thumbnails with sharp edges), JPEG (smaller files, good for photographic content with adjustable quality), or WebP (modern format with excellent compression). Additional options include setting custom output dimensions (if you need a specific resolution for a platform), JPEG quality control, and a one-click crop to common thumbnail aspect ratios (16:9 for YouTube, 1:1 for Instagram, 9:16 for TikTok). The extracted image downloads immediately with no account or sign-up required.
A great thumbnail drives engagement. YouTube creators spend significant effort designing custom thumbnails because the algorithm and viewer behavior strongly favor videos with compelling preview images. Even for internal or private videos, a representative thumbnail makes library navigation faster and more intuitive. Instead of using a video player's default frame (which is often a black frame or a random midpoint), this tool lets you choose the exact frame that best represents the content.

A travel vlogger records a 4K video at a scenic overlook. After uploading, they seek to the frame where the sunset light hits perfectly, capture it as a 1920x1080 JPEG at 95% quality, and upload it as the custom thumbnail for their YouTube video.
An online course instructor captures a frame from each lesson video showing the whiteboard content at its most informative moment. The 16:9 PNG thumbnails serve as preview images in the course platform, helping students identify each lesson's topic.
