Remove password protection from PDFs that you are authorized to unlock
Unlock PDF removes password protection from encrypted PDF documents. If you are the authorized owner of a password-protected PDF or have received permission to remove the lock, this tool decrypts the file so you can open, edit, and share it without password restrictions. All decryption happens in your browser with no server interaction. Password-protected PDFs are common for business documents, but the password requirement becomes an obstacle during routine workflows: merging protected PDFs, printing a file that has printing disabled, extracting pages from a locked document, or simply opening a file when the recipient no longer remembers the password. When you have legitimate access, the protection becomes friction rather than security. The tool supports PDFs encrypted with standard 128-bit AES encryption and the older RC4 encryption. You provide the password, and the tool decrypts the file in memory, producing a new unprotected PDF. The original encrypted file remains on your device untouched.
Upload the password-protected PDF and enter the document's open password. The tool attempts to decrypt the file using the provided credentials. If successful, it produces a new PDF without any encryption or restrictions. The decryption is performed entirely in the browser using JavaScript implementations of the PDF encryption algorithms. The tool also detects the encryption type (AES-128 or RC4) automatically and applies the correct decryption method. Once complete, you can download the unlocked PDF and use it freely — print, copy, edit, or share as needed.
Password-protected PDFs create friction in collaborative workflows. A team member sends an encrypted file but forgets to include the password in the message. A contractor receives a protected PDF from a client who no longer remembers why it was locked. An administrator needs to merge several protected PDFs into a single report. In all these cases, the legitimate user needs to remove the protection to perform their work efficiently.
removing passwords from PDFs so they can be merged, printed, or processed in workflows

decrypting PDFs where the password was set by a former colleague or automated system
unlocking course materials and study guides that are password-protected for distribution control
An administrator receives three monthly sales reports, each password-protected by the finance team. Using Unlock PDF, they remove all passwords, then merge the documents into a single quarterly report using Zilita's PDF Merger.
A manager finds a password-protected PDF from an archived project but the project lead has left the company. With the password stored in the company password manager, they unlock the file and resume work on the document.
