Encrypt PDFs with a password to prevent unauthorized access and restrict printing or copying
Protect PDF adds password-based encryption to your PDF documents, restricting access and controlling what recipients can do with the file. You can require a password to open the document, prevent printing, block copying of content, and disallow modifications. All encryption happens in your browser with no server involvement. Sharing PDFs via email, cloud storage, or messaging apps exposes the content to anyone who gains access to the transmission channel. A password layer ensures that even if the file falls into the wrong hands, it remains unreadable without the correct passphrase. For documents containing personal data, financial information, or confidential business strategy, this protection is essential. The tool implements PDF-standard encryption (128-bit AES) that is compatible with Adobe Acrobat, most PDF readers, and browser-based PDF viewers. You can set separate permissions: an owner password that controls restriction settings and a user password that grants basic read access. The encrypted PDF is downloaded as a new file, leaving your original unaltered.
Upload a PDF and enter a password in the encryption field. You can optionally enable restriction flags: prevent printing, prevent content copying, prevent modifications, and prevent form filling. For advanced setups, you can set a separate permissions password that controls these restrictions. Once configured, the tool applies 128-bit AES encryption to the PDF and generates a new protected file. The encryption process encodes the document so that a password is required to decrypt and view the contents. The tool also shows a strength indicator for the password you choose, encouraging more secure passphrase selection. The original PDF on your device remains unchanged — the protection is applied to a new copy.
Sending a confidential proposal, financial statement, or employee contract as an unprotected PDF means anyone who intercepts the email or accesses the shared folder can read it. Password protection adds a practical security layer that prevents casual access. Even for internal distribution, password protection reduces the risk of accidental exposure when a document is forwarded or leaked.
sending confidential proposals and financial documents that must not fall into competitor hands
distributing employee contracts and salary information that require restricted access
sharing privileged case documents that must be protected during transmission
emailing tax returns and financial statements that contain sensitive personal data
An HR manager emails 12 employment contracts to new hires. Each PDF is protected with a unique password sent separately via SMS, ensuring that even if the email is compromised, the contracts remain unreadable.
A company secretary sends quarterly board reports to ten directors. The PDF is encrypted with a shared password and printing is disabled, reducing the chance of physical copies being left in unattended meeting rooms.
